I am one of those authors (I still cringe slightly when I use that word to describe myself!) who takes negative reviews to heart and gets upset by harsh criticism. I can handle constructive criticism that I can learn from, but nastiness I find very hard to deal with.
However, tonight I have amused myself somewhat with my latest bad review. Not too long ago I got quite upset when someone compared my writing to that of a four-year-old, but also suggested the sex scenes were good (a four-year-old writing good sex scenes, I think not!). Another review said I write like a fourth grader (which I assume would be around 8 years old). My latest review says I write like a 10-year-old.
So on the whole, I must be improving in leaps and bounds, from having the skills of a 4-year-old, an 8-year-old and then finally a 10-year-old in the space of only 2-3 months. Wow, I impress myself. My editor must be so proud that my writing ability has advanced so much in such a short space of time!
